Science Question

I have this assignment due and I will provide all the information and if you can finish it earlier I will appreciate it and if there is anything let me know. I have this assignment due and have 3 parts and make sure to be your own words not from outside resource the professor will know and add reference at the end of the page.

Part 1

3.1a Discussion: - Who Should Study? [GRADED]

Assignment: The Relevance and Impact of Philosophy of Science

Analyze the significance of the philosophy of science and its relevance to various groups, including scientists, philosophers, and the general public. Consider the following questions:

  1. Who should be concerned with the study of the philosophy of science?
  2. What is the importance of this field for different groups?
  3. How does the philosophy of science impact scientific practice and public understanding?

Task Requirements:

  1. Initial Post (100 words) :

Evaluate which groups should be concerned with the philosophy of science.

Provide a well-reasoned argument for your position.

Include specific examples to support your reasoning.

Consider the potential impact on scientific progress, critical thinking, and societal understanding.

Grading Criteria:

Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the philosophy of science and its implications.

Present logical and well-supported arguments.

Provide relevant and illuminating examples to illustrate your points.

Offer substantive responses to peers that further the discussion.

Note: Superficial posts or responses (e.g., brief agreements without elaboration) will not meet the assignment requirements. Aim for comprehensive, thoughtful contributions that advance the class dialogue on this topic.

Part 2

3.2 Discussion Board: Karl Popper's Science of falsification [GRADED]

Assignment: Critical Analysis of Karl Popper's Falsification Theory

This assignment requires you to engage critically with Karl Popper's concept of falsification as presented in his seminal work "Conjectures and Refutations." Your task is to analyze the first ten pages of Popper's paper and provide a well-reasoned personal assessment of the falsification theory and its implications for scientific practice.

Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of Popper's falsification theory
  2. Critically evaluate the theory's applicability across scientific disciplines
  3. Reflect on the impact of falsification on your understanding of inductive reasoning
  4. Assess the scientific status of psychoanalysis through the lens of falsification
  5. Consider potential limitations of Popper's theory in defining science

Instructions:

  1. Read pages 1-10 of Karl Popper's "Conjectures and Refutations" or watch the provided video summarizing these pages.
  2. Formulate your personal opinion on the concept of falsification, addressing the following questions:
  • Is falsification a valid method for defining scientific practice?
  • Can falsification be applied universally across all branches of science?
  • How has your understanding of inductive reasoning been affected?
  • Do you consider psychoanalysis scientific based on Popper's criteria?
  • Does Popper's falsification theory impose limitations on what can be classified as science?

3. Support your arguments with evidence from the text and, if necessary, additional reputable sources.

4. Cite all references used in your analysis using a consistent citation style.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Format: Essay
  • Length: 150 words
  • Citations: Required for all sources used
  • 2 peer comments required for this assignment

Resources:

This video reads pages 1 to 10 of the attached pdf that contains the full essay first published as part of the book Conjectures and Refutations..

Part 3

Scientific paper analysis: The case of the disappearing teaspoons

Assignment: Analyzing the Sociological Mystery of Disappearing Teaspoons

Background You have been given data from a real longitudinal cohort study carried out at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, Australia (BMJ, 2005). The researchers investigated the mysterious disappearance of teaspoons from workplace tearooms. After five months of observation, they administered a follow-up questionnaire to employees asking about their history of teaspoon theft, moral attitudes about it, and satisfaction with “teaspoon coverage” in the workplace.

Your Task

You will visualize this dataset and interpret the social dynamics of teaspoon theft in the workplace.

Part A – MAKE THE FOLLOWING BAR GRAPHS ( by HAND)

graph paper (0.5 cm squares)

1. Create a bar chart showing the percentage of respondents who have ever stolen a teaspoon versus those who have not.

Make a separate bar chart for the percentage who stole one in the last year.

2. For those who admitted to theft, create a bar chart showing the different sources (“from where?”) and the percentage who reported each source for lifetime theft and past-year theft.

Use different colors or patterns to distinguish lifetime vs. past-year percentages.

3. Show the distribution of attitudes toward whether stealing teaspoons is wrong.

4. Show the distribution of satisfaction levels with teaspoon coverage.

Part B – Analysis and Conclusions (total 500 words) Answer the following based on your graphs:

  1. What fraction of employees report ever stealing a teaspoon, and how many admit to doing it in the past year? Does this suggest habitual theft, a cultural norm, or isolated incidents?
  2. Which source is most common? Does the pattern change between lifetime theft and past-year theft?
  3. Compare the moral attitudes about teaspoon theft to self-reported theft behavior. Is there a mismatch between what people say and what they do?
  4. Given that most employees are dissatisfied with teaspoon availability, discuss whether dissatisfaction might be driving theft, or whether theft is creating dissatisfaction. Could this be a “tragedy of the commons” scenario?
  5. Based on the visualized data, propose at least two strategies the institute could implement to reduce loss (e.g., structural changes, awareness campaigns, teaspoon tracking).

Deliverables

  1. Hand-made, 4–5 graphs (clearly labeled, with titles and axes, and in % form unless raw counts are explicitly needed). Take pictures or scan.
  2. A handwritten analysis (~500 words) with numbered answers to Part B. take pictures,
  3. Submit graphs and report as a single PDF document .

Grading Criteria

  • 40% Accuracy and clarity of graphs
  • 20% Data interpretation skills
  • 20% Depth of analysis and connection to sociological/economic concepts
  • 20% Quality of presentation (organization, clarity, and formatting)
