For this assignment, you will analyze common nursing practice issues and their implications on patient care at the local and state level.
STEP 1. IDENTIFICATION
Choose a practice issue to research from the three topic areas below. You will retain this topic throughout the course. This week you are focused on how the practice issue impacts nursing practice and influences policies in your state and the local area. In Week 5, you will expand and review the impact of the practice issue on a national and global level. In Week 7, you will analyze your findings to compare the impact of the practice issue at different levels and propose solutions through policy development.

STEP 2. EXPLORATION
Begin researching your practice issue:
- Explore the issue's impact in your practice setting, community, and state.
- Make an appointment with the WCU Librarian to discover supporting literature related to the practice issue, your local area and state, and policy addressing the practice issue.
- Address the impact or influence of professional associations concerning the practice issue. Identify professional associations' interest in the practice issue. Explore how and why professional associations influence the issue. What is the impact of this influence?
- Interview nursing leaders in your practice setting or community to discover the local impact of this practice issue.
- Contact your state’s Board of Nursing for insight on the practice issue at the state level. Similarly, review other government agencies, such as the governor’s office or your state representative’s office, for additional understanding. You will want to discover the scope and severity of the practice issue at the local and state levels.
STEP 3. CREATE
Record your findings in an infographic to display your findings. Include the following:
- The topic area and practice issue
- A description of the practice issue as it relates to your local and state
- How this issue could impact the overall quality of patient care
- How this issue could impact the nursing profession in general
- Relevant legislation and policies related to the practice issue and its impact on nursing practice
- The audience to whom the infographic will apply
