Overview
From Castaneda's analysis of the colonial period, how did Spanish settlers establish control over indigenous women? Who were the main drivers of policies and what were their key concerns and priorities? Pick a case to illustrate and discuss the main characteristics of gendered patriarchal relations during the colonial period and the position of indigenous women, settler women and mestiza women vis-a-vis this process of settlement. What did they replace?

Castaneda talks about how indigenous women experienced subordination - what layers of this process does she address?
