SWK-4471 Social Work with Groups

Overview

This assignment is a two-parter. The first is part of a discussion question and the second ties in with the assignment last week regarding the group proposal. I will provide the relevant material.

Part One

One of the key aspects of the Initial Stage of a group is getting your group members to begin feeling comfortable with not only you but also with each other. Another key concept in the Initial Stage of the group is to build trust and begin thinking about setting goals.

1) Identify or create one “ice breaker” exercise that can be used for your group in order to build cohesion and reduce anxiety. Tell me what the icebreaker is and cite where you found it. Additionally, tell me how you feel it will be beneficial for the group. (minimum 1-2 paragraphs) - 5 points

2) Research or create one homework assignment for the initial stage of your group that will help them establish goals as discussed in the text (pp. 193-196) and PowerPoint slides for chapter 6. Tell me what the homework is and cite where you found it. Additionally, provide me with a dialogue of how you would communicate this assignment to your group members so that they would have clear instructions on how to complete. This section will help me assess how well you can provide instructions to your group members. Cite to support. (minimum of 2-3 paragraphs) - 8 points

3) How will the homework assignment be beneficial for your group, and what will you do if someone does not do their homework? (minimum of 1-2 paragraphs) - 5

Part Two

You must submit your idea for your group at a minimum in order to fulfill the requirements of this "assignment". Please make sure you provide enough information about the idea for a group so that I can provide you with proper feedback.

Below is information to assist you in formulating your idea:

For your final, you will be required to create a Group Proposal. You will find in your future career that you will have many great ideas for creating a group in your community. You may find that there is an unmet need in your community that would benefit from creating a group, but many good ideas for groups are never developed because there is no clear and convincing plan. A Group Proposal is a plan for how a group will be conducted.

In the proposal for your final you must identify the goals/benefits, the rationale/need for the group, identify the objectives as well as the practical aspects of the group such as where you are going to meet, when and how often. This document provides legitimacy to your group, and allows for support or even funding.

As such, a large chunk of your final will be in creating a Group Proposal (APA Paper) for your "group". You do not have to actually create a real group within your community.

How to begin?!

What are you passionate about? Where do you see a need? Consider these questions as you submit your Group Topic idea this week. You can even research existing types of groups or create something new!
