ADDICTIONS CASE STUDY: PART 2 - DIAGNOSTIC IMPRESSIONS
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
The Addictions Case Study Assignment is designed to help you make application of course content to a potential counseling situation. The assignment will be divided up into three parts: Addictions Case Study: 1 - Case Conceptualization, Addictions Case Study: 2 - Diagnostic Impressions, and Addictions Case Study: 3 - Treatment Plan.
GENERAL PAPER INSTRUCTIONS The general requirements for the paper are: A medium-length paper (about a 7- to 9-page summary, not including the title and references pages – no abstract is needed). This is to be formatted in the most current APA style. For this assignment, you are only required to use one source: the DSM-5-TR (however, you can add more if desired). ASSIGNMENT SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS For Addictions Case Study: 2 - Diagnostic Impressions, again using the Addictions Case Study: Narrative, taking what you wrote in Part 1 and from the narrative, then documenting your diagnostic impressions of the client. In your write-up, using the DSM-5-TR, you will need to answer (each bullet is about a paragraph – review the rubric for more detail): What is the primary diagnosis for this client? Put your full diagnosis in bold and list the criteria the client meets from the DSM with supporting statements from Marci’s narrative. What is the prevalence rate, any culture and/or gender-related diagnostic issues, functional consequences, and comorbidity for this particular diagnosis? What are the differential diagnoses to be aware of for this client (choose only one/those that THIS client could be dealing with, not all that the DSM may show)? What are any secondary and tertiary diagnoses for this client? Put your full diagnosis in bold and list the criteria the client meets from the DSM with supporting statements from Marci’s narrative. What is the prevalence rate, any culture and/or gender-related diagnostic issues, functional consequences, and comorbidity for this particular diagnosis? What are the differential diagnoses to be aware of for this client (choose only one/those that THIS client could be dealing with, not all that the DSM may show)?
Note that each diagnosis you give needs to have the ICD-10 code written in this order: F-code number (without the parentheses), the name of the diagnosis, the severity, and any appropriate specifiers (if required).
Divide your paper as follows (showing each heading below as level 1 or level 2, starting on p. 2 – no abstract is needed): ********See attachment......
**** When working on the Case Study Part 2, please be sure to use the exact headings and terminology as stated in the assignment rubric. Within your paper, clearly break these into their corresponding sections to make your answers easy for me to find.
For example: Each diagnostic impression (you need three) requires: DSM-5: F-code, Title of Disorder, Severity. All pertinent criteria met listed. Summary of the Prevalence and Functional Consequences , Comorbidity, Culture- and Gender-related diagnostic issues. Differential diagnoses related to the diagnosis. Clearly define your terms (using citations). **** Note: The areas on culture and gender-related diagnostic issues require that you provide a breakdown of information for these areas. ****
These are not specific to Marci, since her culture/race is not identified, instead provide information for several cultures/available for each diagnosis discussed. ***
*** You may have to search outside of the DSM for the information requested ***
***Please include health related consequences under functional consequences
******* Hint: Since this is an addictions related course, your diagnoses should all be substance related.
Some issues to review before posting your assignment: - Standard paragraphs should be 100-200 words, some of you have paragraphs that span an entire page - Spell out all abbreviations the first time used. Example: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). - Follow standard APA format for citations and references (if you are unsure, check here: http://www.drgwen.org/materials/apa/board.htm) - The proper citation for the DSM is (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) See: http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2013/08/how-to-c... - Be sure that citations and references match up - Keep indents standard at 1/2" or five spaces - Keep font consistent throughout paper, using Times New Roman 12-point font
- Please don't use automated reference and citation generators, these make it difficult for me to correct, edit, and grade.
**** Since this is an addictions course, each of the three diagnoses should be substance related.
**** The statistics that you provide for culture and gender-related issues for each diagnosis are NOT specific to Marci. Provide information about how each diagnosis can be broken down by gender (% male % female) and culture (% Caucasian, % Hispanic, % African American, % other if applicable). You may need to use outside sources to find this information.
*** Note the proper definition of a differential diagnosis which means a similar diagnosis that can be ruled out based on symptoms. For example, you may be able to rule out AUD mild, if the client shows symptoms of AUD severe.
