Hello Class,
The way I view it is that higher education is accountable to society as a whole. As the text says higher education must be “aligning departmental goals with institutional goals, and institutional goals with state and federal goals” (McClellan & Stringer, 2019, p.97). The world of higher education heavily depends upon state and federal funding to function and best support students. In addition to the public support, a main intention of higher education is to create contributing members of a community. We are accountable for educating and guiding students while they are enrolled to become the functioning members of society to further society into the future.
To ensure accountability in higher education there are two approaches. First, stakeholders such as State or Federal governmental agencies create policies and procedures that higher education institutions must follow in order to receive public assistance. The other side is accreditation which guides schools in creating well-rounded students to enter society. Schools are not required to be accredited, however this is an additional level of accountability for high-quality education. Accreditation puts “a greater focus on institutional performance, student achievement, and increased transparency” (McClellan & Stringer, 2019, p. 103). This ensures we are creating students fully prepared to leave school and enter society.
In both Christianity and in higher education, we must build others up. With faith, we build our brothers and sisters up, and in higher education, student affairs professionals build up the students to build up our communities. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (New International Version, 2011). A main goal of higher education is to build up society through the students being active members of their community. This is done by following guidance of scripture such as 1 Thessalonians 5:11 or the guidance of stakeholders in the government and accreditation.
