  • Uhl Bhein et al. suggest we need to diagnose organizations using complexity leadership theory, that is, there are always organizational and leadership theories at play. They further state we need to look at organizations through both theoretical lenses and not just one. It is here we can identify issues and gaps to aid in fixing the problem. In this exercise students will be introduced to a recent well known case: The Penn State Jerry Sandusky Scandal.
  • After reviewing the case, IN 6-8 PAGES EXCLUDING THE TITLE PAGE AND REFERENCE PAGE) students will diagnose the case using the lenses of leadership theory, organizational theory and Scott’s Pillars of Organizations. The idea is to apply terms, models etc. we have learned throughout to the case. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO RESEARCH THE CASE FURTHER ON YOUR OWN. You should be analyzing things such as decision making, leadership styles, followership, motivations, situations, and our leadership conceptualization to dissect the cases. Students will write up their analysis and submit it.
  • I suggest using headings to separate the sections to make organization and readability easier (DO NOT USE THE QUESTIONS AS HEADINGS). I will be evaluating your analysis based on the below rubric. It is ok if you discovered something another student has. If we are all observing this through the lens of leadership and organizations we should agree on some areas. For this assignment, should be done utilizing the APA style formatting for in text citing etc. Apply the literature and support from assigned readings and class discussions related to leadership theories and models.

Some things you may wish to address:

What was the leadership identified in the case? What possibly should have been the leadership?

  • Which of Scott’s Pillars were at play here and which one/s failed?
  • What organizational theory could you apply here from Pugh and Hickson text?
  • What systems were at play in the case? If you created a Map of the systems at play what would that look like?
  • Do leaders change the organization, OR do organizations change the leader? This is considered your Organizational Leadership Aha! Moment they experienced during the semester.
  • Based on your knowledge of leadership and organizational theory what would you suggest to improve this organization? SUPPORT ALL IDENTIFIED POINTS WITH RESEARCH FROM THE LITERATURE NOT SIMPLY YOUR OPINION! IN TEXT CITE!
