Experiential Learning Activity D: Career Counseling for All
School counselors must be aware of societal issues related to gender, race, ethnicity, faith diversity, sexual orientation, and disabilities that may influence students’ college and career decision-making process. This awareness can assist school counselors to develop ethical and culturally relevant strategies to promote college readiness and access and to facilitate post-secondary transitions for all students.
Conduct two interviews, one with a member of the special education team and one with a school counselor to learn more about specific societal issues (gender, race, ethnicity, faith diversity, sexual orientation, and disabilities) in a school setting.
Develop a tri-fold brochure for high school students to assist them in learning about the different career options. Your brochure should address the following:
Identify issues or obstacles that students may encounter in the career decision-making process due to gender, race, ethnicity, faith diversity, sexual orientation, or disabilities.
Promote relevant career strategies for advocating for diverse clients’ career and educational development and employment opportunities in a global economy.
- Facilitate processes for identifying and using career, avocational, educational, occupational, and labor market information resources, technology, and information systems.
- Provide community resources, organizations, or opportunities available to students to assist with gender, race, ethnicity, faith diversity, sexual orientation, or disability issues in career planning.
The brochure should include engaging graphics that are relevant to the content, visually appealing, and use space appropriately.
