Overview
Class meetings will consist, for the most part, in guided seminar discussion; thorough reading is assumed, and energetic class participation is expected. There are two graded written assignments for the course. Paper I is a five-page paper (double-spaced) that summarizes several foundational approaches to movements (the material either from Week 2 or from Week 3) and responds to them critically by drawing on more recent work (the material in Week 4); this paper is due at the beginning of class in Week 5. Paper II, an eight-to-ten-page paper, draws selectively on material throughout the course in order to analyze one of the urban movements from the second half of the course (or your own topic), focusing on some aspect of the following question: How does a particular analytical approach help us understand the emergence or impacts of (or the strategic challenges faced by) this kind of mobilization? This paper is due at the end of the quarter. Grades will be based on Paper I (25%), Paper II (50%) and class participation (25%).
