Due Process vs. Crime Control

Finally, although crime control is a significant objective of the system, the scale should be on due process, in order to safeguard personal rights and to avoid wrongful convictions. Fairness and protections of legal safeguards is assured by Miranda v. Then, in Arizona (1966), the rule that stands for informing the suspects of their rights, came on roll. The same things, however, can also lead to wrongful convictions if one focuses too much on crime control.

Media and Public Perception

Media coverage offers public images of crime, including mostly violent crimes and fear.. While crime rates are going down, images of rare cases dominate the media to create a false sense of increasing crime, which influences unwise policies.

Ethics and Justice

If it were not for it, the criminal justice system would be immoral in precluding injustices such as any wrong as in the use of racial profiling, police brutality, or even the oppression of the LGBTQ community, etc. The prosecutors have to seek justice whereas they only hunt convictions. Ethical guidelines for fairness for sentencing, rehabilitation and law enforcement should be the basis for policies.

Crime Classification and Impact

Although robbery is an easy crime to notice in the street, fraud and environmental violations are corporate crimes that are more damaging to society. Also, the 2008 financial crisis that hit corporations because of corporate fraud contributed to economic suffering and job loss. While Street crimes can certainly harm an individual, corporate crimes constitute a systematic destructiveness resulting in harm to general masses and hence pose a greater threat to the individual in terms of long term harm.

Policies of crime classification, responsibility of reporters and due processes in general will ensure fairness and justice are served to all.
