What is a communicable disease? How can they be spread and what is something we can do to prevent transferring diseases around our workplace? Also, what are some specific communicable diseases that are discussed in the chapter that are more common in a salon workplace?
A communicable disease is a contagious illness that is spread from one person to another or spread from animals to humans. Communicable disease can be spread through the air of which people breathe in, digesting food or drinks that may have been contaminated, animal or insect bites, and through direct contact. Preventative measures include frequently washing hands properly when at a workplace and disinfecting tools and equipment in the workplace using the proper disinfectant materials and process. Anyone-time-use items should also be disposed of when used. Common communicable diseases in a salon workplace include a common cold, lice, ringworm, scabies, all of which come from direct contact, and tuberculosis, which is inhaled through air.
