below is the directions and below that is the original feedback, i uploaded the draft of the week 8 and all other documentation from that week. I have no idea why I was graded so low.
W3: Paper Proposal
As set forth in the syllabus, you can write a traditional research paper, a case note, or a position paper.
If you opt to write a research paper, the research paper must address a legal issue raised in this class or the class readings. Also, a research paper must do more than summarize your findings. Instead, your research paper must have a clear thesis. A thesis is a statement that you seek to prove with evidence in your paper. Because this class is a Legal Studies class, you should limit your evidence to legal sources, i.e., cases, law review articles, and other primary and secondary legal sources.
If you write a case note, you should select a recent Supreme Court case and then you should provide your analysis of that majority's reasoning and the legal effects of that case. I have attached a handout that describes the parts of a case note: Writing a Case Note
The final type of paper is called a position paper. In this type of paper, you should provide your legal opinion on a contemporary Homeland Security law issue. For example, you may want to write a position paper on the contemporary debate over immigration, the prevention of terrorism, or another issue in the news. To support your position, you need to use legal sources. You can find additional legal sources by searching the school's online library.
Once you have decided on your paper's format, you need to select a topic and then try to formulate a tentative thesis as well as a short list of your possible sources. You should post your paper topic along with tentative thesis and sources in this Discussion and then comment or critique on the topics of two of your peers. Then, please be ready to answer any questions that I may have about your topic.
Ideally, you should post your proposal early in the week so that your peers can provide you with feedback on your proposal.
Your final paper should incorporate various legal sources, including law review articles and cases.
Some of you may already be familiar with Nexis Uni, a Lexis Nexis product. In contrast to other Lexis Nexis products, Nexis Uni is specifically for university students, and it provides you with access to a tremendous amount of legal material.
If you don't already know how to access Nexis Uni, please follow the following step. When logged into the class, please click on the library tab. Ensure that your pop-blockers are disabled as the library screen will emerge as a pop-up.
Then, click on Research on the library's main page.
Then, click on databases (articles & ebooks).
Then, click on the letter N.
On the main page, you can search for cases, law review articles, publications, and legal news.
This tool will come in handy later in the class as you work on one or more of the discussion boards and projects in this class.
If you need any help locating materials on Nexis Uni, you can reach out to the librarian or me.
The librarian can also provide you with invaluable help and advice very quickly. You can reach the librarian using the chat function or email the library's homepage.
As you work on your proposal, remember that I am here to help.

You needed to include a few references to qualify for all possible points here. The case is not a reference to itself. You did to post comments to at least two of your classmates' posts. A reminder: students may not use AI to create the document that will be submitted. PS -- include your rough draft, so that I can see what steps that you took to between it and your final submission. |
