Assignment overview This research essay asks you to critically analyse the relationship between social science and law. You will choose one of two questions and explore how social, economic, cultural, or systemic factors shape legal outcomes. Your response will demonstrate how the social sciences can help society understand the law, and how the law can be better understood in its social context. Question The 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody found that the 'disadvantaged and unequal position of Aboriginal people in Australian society in every way, whether socially, economically or culturally' was the most significant contributing factor to their overincarceration. Critically evaluate this statement. Include in your answer an explanation of how social, economic and cultural disadvantage can result in criminalisation, and identify any other significant contributing factors.
