This week I chose to imitate the style of Annie Leibovitz, who is best known for her commercial and fashion photography, especially her portraits for Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone. I was drawn to her work because of how she makes portraits feel both staged and natural at the same time—her subjects are often carefully posed, but the images capture so much personality that they feel alive. Her dominant characteristics include dramatic lighting, bold color contrasts, and compositions that frame the subject as larger than life.
For my photo, I tried to capture those qualities by using strong natural window light on one side of the subject’s face and keeping the background simple but moody. Like Leibovitz, I wanted the image to feel cinematic, almost like a still from a movie, while still showing a bit of the subject’s character. Even though I don’t have studio equipment, I experimented with positioning and shadows to create that dramatic effect she’s known for.
I chose Leibovitz because I admire the way she transforms ordinary settings into iconic portraits, and I wanted to challenge myself to think about lighting and mood more carefully. This exercise made me realize how much the placement of light and subject positioning can change the whole tone of a photograph.
