I personally do not have any experience in direct pollution prevention (P2) programs, but ultimately I feel that upper management drives the culture of the workforce towards what they promote and prioritize. They can prioritize spending on any initiative through budget, prioritize involvement through carved out time for employees to complete the tasks and not feel rushed to just do an additional task on top of their already assigned workload. In the field of P2 I feel that it could be hard for a company to look at an upfront investment cost to save money down the road versus just paying the traditional amount of operational costs such as maybe additional dump fees that will take years to add up to the investment.
As I said earlier that I feel upper management drives the culture of its workers, below is a great example of what happened at Boeing. They put their profits ahead of all other duties they had to fulfill to their customers. Although there were many issues that were a problem, the company not being strict on their quality testing ended up costing many people their lives.
“The message of Boeing is it placed profits ahead of safety and the result has been a series of crashes/mechanical problems that have led to inspections by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and litigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)….The problems at Boeing were due to pushing through production without adequate testing of parts and other lax quality controls” (Mintz, 2025).
