I believe the common errors I make when I’m writing are run-on sentences, and lack of punctuation such as semi-colons, and ellipses.
While reading through this chapter I came to realize that when I’m simply trying to write, without purpose I find myself using “fill in” words to simply create a long “proper” looking sentence. Lengthy sentences have been expected of me for a while now, therefore I found myself developing the bad habit of writing down run-on sentences. As it was covered in this chapter, a sentence does not have to have many words at all, a fact that I had forgotten. A “proper” sentence in my mind has, as of high school, has been a sentence with a significant amount of words. I am not used to writing sentences with two letters, let alone a single letter, however remembering that filler words do not create a proper sentence (defined as a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate and expresses a complete thought), I’ll be able to practice writing without them.
My other common errors in writing are my lack of proper punctuation, specifically semi colons, and ellipses. I did not make it a habit to use semi-colons and when I realized that using them could be useful in the way that I wouldn’t have to completely restructure my sentences, I did not know if my use of semi-colons was correct. The same goes for ellipses. I in fact did not know that ellipses are to indicate omission of words in a quotation. I only knew it to be used to show a pause, hesitation, or an unfinished thought, which in regular academic writing is not commonly used. In order to familiarize myself with the use of semi-colons I could watch tutorials as well as use them in my writing even if I don’t use them properly the first few times. Ellipses are extremely useful especially when quoting from text, therefore I know I will be using it in my writing plenty, and if I’m not sure if I'm using it correctly I could ask a peer, professor, or do my own research, the way I would with the semi colon.
The advice I'd give to people that make the same errors is to ask someone with proper English skills for help. I especially heavily suggest they read more articles, or books as many grammatical errors will be properly displayed in professional journalism and or writing. I say this because though I stated I did not remember a sentence could be as short as one word, I was subconsciously aware of that fact because of texts from all genres of books.
