I live in Jubail, an industrial city in Saudi Arabia, where the air quality is significantly affected by industrial activities such as oil and gas production and petroleum refining. On bad days, I can easily smell chemicals in the air, and there is often a visible haze due to these industrial emissions. Jubail is located in the eastern region, where natural dust storms frequently occur during the summer. These hazardous conditions lead to high concentrations of particulate matter, causing respiratory irritation, and as a result, we often avoid outdoor activities.
I especially experience health issues during poor weather conditions, such as throat irritation, and if we do not take care of our health during a sandstorm, it can lead to fever. The air quality in Jubail can vary significantly between the industrial areas and residential districts. In the residential areas, the air quality is often acceptable, and there are good air quality days as well when the wind conditions are favorable, helping to disperse pollutants. On these days, the air quality index can range from moderate to even good. In summary, the air quality experience in Jubail is variable, which requires residents to be aware of the daily air quality forecast. It is important to take precautionary measures, such as avoiding outdoor activities and preferring to stay indoors during sandstorms, smog, or poor visibility.
According to Sekar et al. (2025), atmospheric conditions are essential in determining air quality, influencing both actual exposure and public perception. Ambient air quality (AAQ) is a significant factor that predicts individuals' perceptions of workplace air quality. Poor outdoor conditions, such as dull or polluted air, lead respondents to report unhealthy air in their surroundings and workplaces. Sekar et al. (2025) study emphasizes the effects of urbanization, vehicle emissions, and industrial activity, with metropolitan residents facing higher pollutant exposure due to concentrated traffic and industrial sources. Local pollution, especially from waste burning and high vehicle volumes, impairs air quality during atmospheric stability. Additionally, environmental temperature and seasonal changes affect public awareness of pollution; lower temperatures often cause increased pollution accumulation, raising public concern. Workers exposed to outdoor conditions reported more respiratory and irritation-related symptoms, indicating a strong relationship between outdoor meteorological conditions and occupational exposure. Overall, the findings show that air quality is influenced by atmospheric behavior, local emissions, and environmental patterns, which also shape public perceptions of air pollution risks.
