Before reading Chapter 8, I thought storytelling was mostly about the events that happened in a movie. After learning about narratology, I understand that it is really the study of how stories work and how meaning is constructed between the filmmaker and the audience. Narratology explains that a movie is more than just a sequence of events because viewers actively search for coherence by connecting clues, interpreting characters, and making predictions about what will happen next. Instead of being passive, the audience helps create meaning from the story through their own experiences and interpretations.
I think film narratology differs from literary narratology because movies have visual and audio elements that books do not. A novel relies on written descriptions and the reader’s imagination, while films communicate through cinematography, editing, lighting, music, sound, and actors’ performances. These techniques influence how viewers interpret the story and emotions. Even when a book and movie tell the same story, the experience feels different because film uses visual storytelling to guide the audience’s understanding.
One film that changed the way I understood the story because of its narration was The Sixth Sense. The film gives viewers information very carefully, causing us to interpret the events one way until the ending completely changes our understanding. Looking back, all of the clues were present, but the narrative structure encouraged the audience to interpret them differently. That made me realize how much storytelling depends on the way information is presented rather than simply what happens.
Chapter 8 also introduced the ideas of mimesis and diegesis. Mimesis refers to the imitation or representation of reality through actions and events shown in the film. Diegesis refers to the world of the story itself, including the characters, settings, and events that exist within that fictional world. Understanding these concepts helped me realize that filmmakers carefully build a believable story world while also guiding the audience’s interpretation. Overall, Chapter 8 showed me that storytelling is a collaboration between the filmmaker and the spectator, with meaning being created through both the film itself and the viewer’s interpretation.
