My name is Bert and I live along the Texas Gulf Coast. I have spent more than 35 years working in occupational safety and health, primarily supporting the construction, industrial, and energy sectors. Throughout my career, I have served in a variety of safety leadership roles and currently work as a Safety Manager for an industrial electrical contractor while also consulting with organizations on risk management, safety leadership, and organizational improvement.
One of the things I enjoy most about this profession is that every day presents a new challenge. Whether helping an organization improve its safety management system, mentoring supervisors, or conducting risk assessments, I find the greatest satisfaction in seeing people return home safely at the end of the day. Over the years, I have learned that achieving sustainable safety excellence requires much more than policies and procedures—it depends on leadership, organizational culture, communication, trust, and employee engagement.
On a personal note, I have been married to my wonderful wife for nearly 30 years, and together we have three children. Our "middle child"—a term of endearment for our 26-year-old daughter—will be celebrating her wedding this fall, which has kept our family both busy and excited. Our oldest is our only son, and he and his wife are expecting our first grandchild in just a couple of weeks. They are incredibly excited to become parents, but I think my wife and I may be even more excited about becoming grandparents! Our youngest daughter recently began pursuing her bachelor's degree here at Columbia Southern University, following in her father's footsteps. I'd like to think she's a chip off the old block, though she might tell you she's simply making her own path.
I am currently pursuing the Doctor of Occupational Safety and Health degree and look forward to the challenge of expanding my understanding of leadership, organizational behavior, and management. Although my career has provided extensive practical experience working with organizations of many sizes, I believe this course will help me better understand the organizational theories that explain why people behave the way they do and how leaders can create environments that encourage both individual and organizational success.
One topic I find especially interesting is the relationship between organizational culture, leadership, and employee motivation. Throughout my career, I have observed that some employees consistently choose to work safely because it aligns with their personal values, while others comply only when they know someone is watching or they feel as though they are required to work safely. Understanding what drives those differences has become one of my primary professional interests and aligns closely with my long-term doctoral research goals.
I look forward to learning alongside each of you this term and wish everyone all the success that has brought you this far in your educational endeavors.
