I picked Fortnite for this discussion since it's actually my favorite game and I play it a lot. It came out back in 2017, and you can play it on pretty much everything now, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and even your phone. I figured since I already spend so much time playing this game, I might as well look into what's actually going on behind what I see while playing.
Through a Google search, what I found is that Fortnite runs on Unreal Engine, and the physics behind a lot of the destruction comes from a system Epic Games built called Chaos. Chaos Physics is the physics simulation system used in Fortnite, and it's use of various tools within Unreal Engine that can be used to achieve cinematic quality levels of destruction in real time. Before this, when a wall or structure got destroyed in a lot of games, it would just kind of vanish or pop away. With Chaos, impacts, shocks, and explosions now have intensity, making the destruction of structures very realistic. The system works by fracturing Geometry Collections, a type of asset built from static meshes, to achieve real time destruction, so it's more like the game is calculating the force of a hit in the moment instead of just playing the same pre made breaking animation every time. Chaos also supports cloth simulation, allowing for realistic representation of fabrics in motion, which is especially useful for characters wearing capes or robes. I think this kind of physics matters a ton for Fortnite specifically, since building and destroying things is basically the whole point of the game. If it looked fake or floaty when things broke, it would honestly ruin it and make it not as fun to play.
