Overview
I'm working on a sociology/german studies/ philosophy writing question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.
READ, and USE only the sources I provided to formulate your argument and the evidence supported the argument. Writing the reading response FOLLOW THE 1. "GUIDING QUESTIONS" & the structure of "2. How to write a reading response".
1. SOURCES NEED TO USE
1. The Conservation Of Races (pdf. attached below)
2. Strivings of the Negro People : https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1897/...
3. Sociology Hesitant (ca. 1905): https://www.degruyter.com/document/doi/10.1515/978...
2. GUIDING QUESTIONS
- How does Du Bois conceptualize and treat the category “race”? What advantages and what problems do you see in this treatment? How do understand “race”? How does he relate “race” to nationalism, how to class politics?
- What is the role of history for Du Bois? How does history relate to ethnic determinations?
- What does Du Bois mean by the “double-consciousness” (p. 68) Black people have to endure?
- What notion of power is introduced by Du Bois’ discussion of the situation of Black people in the USA around 1900?
- What concept of freedom do you recognize in Du Bois’ reflections on sociology and what it can show?
- Do you see connections to some of the German intellectuals, like Max Weber, or Karl Marx, or Friedrich Nietzsche, that we discussed? Where do you see references to European intellectual traditions?
3. "How to write a reading response":
A reading response should allow you to determine and to record the essential elements, theses and insights of a reading. It is meant as a tool of both reflecting your own thought process and to ‘archive’ a term’s readings.
A reading response does not have to be extensive. It may have a lose form, but should be written in complete sentences. For this class, it should not exceed 400 words.
The following structure is suggested:
1)Give the exact references to your source: What source are you dealing with? What is special about? What do you think one needs to know about it?
2)Identify arguments: What are the main arguments of the text? What secondary arguments can you identify? Give some essential quotes from the text.
3)Analyzing arguments: What do you find interesting about the argument? What is particular about it? What is its logic?
4)Assessment: What do you think about the argument? Do you go along with it? Do you disagree? Why? On what level of the argument do agree/disagree?
Grading of a Reading Response:
Selection of Arguments / Quotations from the Source | 20%
Analytical Depth of Argument Discussion | 35%
Interpretation and Level of Reflection | 25%
Form (rhetoric, language) Please follow the instructions I provided. Use the source I provided by incorporating it into the argument and use quotes from text to support their argument. Don't use any other outside source and make up quotes. | 20%、
