- Preparation:You will be performing a content analysis of 1 hour of a television program of your choice (acceptable programs include: medical dramas, criminal/police dramas or legal dramas, and family dramas - these are generally very good types of programs to review for this assignment and easy to pull examples from that connect to each theory). Reality TV programs tend to be difficult so best to avoid them. Do not review a movie - you will receive a 0 since that is not what was asked of you. Prepare for this assignment by reviewing the readings and your notes on the sociological theories/perspectives discussed in week 1. DO NOT INCLUDE ANY PHOTOS/IMAGES, this is an essay-style assignment. Conform to all the instructions outlined below. NO resubmissions after assignments have been graded.Instructions:
For this assignment, you will perform a content analysis on one episode of a 1-hour television program. This assignment will require you to don the hat of a sociologist undertaking a study using this particular sociological method discussed in Chapter 2. Don your sociological cap to analyze the TV episode and answer ALL of the following throughout your writing:- Provide a brief synopsis of the television episode you're watching (1-2 short paragraphs - if your intro is a page long, it's TOO long).
- How does this particular television episode demonstrate each of the perspectives (functional, conflict, feminist, and symbolic interaction)?
- NOTE: You must provide detailed examples for each perspective but you may find one or two that may be more dominant.
- What may the TV show suggest about our culture?
- What messages did you observe presented along race, social class, and gender lines?
- What are the social and/or political implications of events observed from the episode?
- The paper should be MINIMUM 3 full pages (and not more than 4 pages, please); double-spaced; 11-12-pt font; Margins: 1" (top, bottom, left, and right).
- You should use terminology learned in class and in the text and be sure to properly cite when appropriate, including the program watched (that counts as a source). Please use your own words!
- Grammar and spelling ARE important. Please use the Review tools in Word or your word processing program to check spelling/grammar as points are deducted for mechanics.
- Please upload as a .docx or .pdf file only. Do not copy/paste into the submission text box - this will make your paper look weird and will not be in the format I'm looking for and you will lose points. If you are using Apple Pages you can export the file as a .docx or .pdf.
