Overview
In this module, we've looked at cities and patterns of urban inequality that may seem remote from many of our own experiences of US urban society. However, the study of seemingly distant cases can often help us to gain greater clarity, and even shed new light, on social dynamics in more proximate and familiar cities. The first step in this process is to look for comparisons and contrasts across different urban contexts. Sociologists often use such comparisons to identify and explain common patterns as well as divergent social phenomena across diverse cities.
In this discussion board, I want you identify and reflect on at least one major difference, and one similarity, between cities in the Global South and those in the United States. Why do you think these cases are so different? And how might we explain any similarities that we observe? In your reflection, you should draw on at least one specific idea or example from the module readings, which will provide a basis for your comparisons.
Beyond the above requirements, the specifics of the reflection are up to you. You can write about similarities or differences related to any topics covered in this module - processes of urbanization, housing conditions, inequality, segregation, social stigma, etc. You can also draw on your personal experiences and observations, as well as what you have learned in this course so far, to make your comparison. The goal is to consider what we can learn by comparing seemingly distant cases of cities and urban life.
In addition to your initial post, write a follow-up reply to one of your classmate’s posts that adds something substantive to the discussion. For instance, you can explain why you agree or disagree with the comparisons they make; provide additional examples to support their analysis; or offer alternative explanations for why we observe the similarities or differences they wrote about.
