Please answer 3 out of the 5 questions below. It must be clear which questions you are answering in your journal post. You may answer all 5 if you wish, but only 3 are required.
- Click on the link to the website, "Race: The Power of an Illusion." Explore the website and list at least 3 things you learned about race that stood out for you from viewing the site. (Please note, this website uses Flash and works best on a computer with updated versions of Chrome and Firefox.)
- Why/how is race socially constructed? Explain, using terms from this week’s video and readings to give two examples of how this occurs.
- List at least 2 stereotypes the dominant group (the group with privileged status) has about the marginalized group (the group that experienced oppression) in the USA. How might these stereotypes exaggerate the marginalized group?
- List an example of a time you observed, experienced, or knew someone who experienced racial or ethnic bias, discrimination, and/or prejudice. How does this relate to what you've learned this week?
- Reflect on 'privilege' (unearned advantage, benefit/advantage based on gender role, class/status, perceived race, ethnicity, etc.,) Share an example of a time you experienced or witnessed privilege based on racial identity (being white or being perceived as white, for example).
