Sociology Question

Overview

This paper will be about the reproductive rights movement / pro-choice movement.

I attached the directions and rubric of what the paper should be. There’s a break down of how it should lay out. I will include one social movement tool that I wrote - include that in the paper as the first social movment that was joined. You need to write about two social movements that I joined. The first one is a virtual event that happened on the 28th (https://reproductivefreedomforall.org/events/?past=1). The second one you can find that happened already and write about it. The instructions are:

Assignment 4: Activist Ethnography of your participation in a Social Movement: Due Week 10

Following the definition of social movements that we have studied thus far, students will pick an ongoing (contemporary) social movement and participate in TWO social movement activites for approximately 2 hours. If you need a list of organizations, please look here.Links to an external site.

  • Participation may take the form of attending a general meeting (zoom or live), a protest, engage in a volunteer activity for the social movement, engage in a public hearing and public comment and advocate on behalf of a social movement’s agenda, among other ideas. If you choose to go live or post on social media, please use the class hashtag, #SocialMovementsUCLA.
  • Please stay safe and wear masks, social distance and participate in a way that you feel comfortable with.
  • Start early in the quarter to look for a movement and events. Thinking locally tends to lead to more feasible to attend events, but national level opportunities are also feasible. A list of local and national organizations will be provided on Bruin Learn in Week 2. Many are active locally such as BLM Los Angeles, Students Deserve, the Youth Justice Coalition, JusticeLA, the Young Womens Freedom Center, InnerCity Struggle, Arts for Healing Justice Network, and many others. You are advised to find an event and attend even if its well before the paper is due, this assignment is largely dependent on an event that you cannot yourself schedule, so you have to plan ahead.
  • Your reflection essay should include 1) some brief participant observation notes (location, approximate number of attendees, what were key highlights from event) as well as your own reflection on, for example, 2) why you chose that movement to participate in (personal connection if any), 3) what the movement’s goals are, and what action strategies movement participants are engaging in to further their goals. Finally, 4) you should should connect what you saw to at least three key themes from our class. Your essay should use AT LEAST 10 SOURCES, SEVEN of which are from our class.
  • This assignment will be given a letter grade (out of 20 points).
  • 1200-1500 words, double spaced, 12 pt ft, Times New Roman.
