SOC130 Race and Ethnic Relations

Overview

Please Answer the following question in 5-7 pages. (No more than 1 page over the page limit). 1. Dr. Hill asked you to read the article, The Structure of Knowledge in Westernized Universities Epistemic Racism/Sexism and the Four Genocides/Epistemicides of the Long 16th Century by Ramón Grosfogue. Grosfogue makes the argument that knowledge and understanding has been colonized by the socio-historical experience and worldviews of men from these five countries. What does he mean? Lay out his argument about epistemic racism and sexism. Discuss one of the genocides/epistemicides that is talked about in this article. Next, I would like you to focus on what Resmaa Menakem’s discussion on “Notice the Rage; Notice the Silence” uncovers. What does he unfold in this discussion regarding white body supremacy and bodies of culture? How did this emerge from epistemic racism and sexism? How does this cultural and structural organization of the world impact the body physically and the mind as well? Now, I would like you to select 1 film watched in the latter half of class and discuss how that film helps you elaborate or serve as an example of what Grosfogue and Menakem discuss. The last part of your essay will be linked to your class readings. Please select 2 chapters from (Ch. 6: Race Relations in Flux: From Civil Rights to Black Lives Matter; Ch. 7: Education; Ch. 8: Economic Inequality and the Role of the State; Ch. 10: Crime and Criminal Justice or Ch. 11: Race in the Cultural Imagination) and briefly discuss how each one help us understand how “race” through the lens of white supremacy has unfolded and impact people still today.
