This news article is available on Canvas, under Files: CDS.CC.Summary.5thNatlClimateAssessment.POLITICO.14Nov23.pfg 4. WRITE your essay (double-spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman) and LABEL each step for clarity for all. There are six steps for your exam: o 1: SUMMARIZE the key points of the Politico news article in your own words. [Relatively easy task] Use transitions between these steps. For example, introduce the news article and the selected academic reading, and explain the connections between each step. About half of a page o 2: SELECT & PRESENT ONE QUOTE from either McNall or one of the journal articles identified above. You should a quote that you believe helps you better understand or is applicable to the Politico news article. Put the quote in quotation marks with author name and specific page number. [More challenging task] Consider a quote to be about 2-6 sentences that convey and clarify a specific point – that you believe you can apply or link to the news article.

2 For quotes, cite them in-text by: (Author, year: page number). If it is a digital book, then cite them in-text by: (Author, year: subhead title, digital copy). Quotes are not counted toward page length. o 3: APPLY or USE the quote to explain or better understand some aspect of the news article. In other words, EXPLAIN how the quote you selected (that introduces and/or explains a point that has been found through research or academic scholarship) explains or is connected to the more recent news article. The link between the two must be clearly demonstrated. Transitions help in clarifying the connections. [Most challenging task] The link between the scholarly reading as identified in the quote (step 2) and the news event presented in Politico must be clear, must demonstrate your understanding of both, and must demonstrate an ability to use the academic readings – and a research-based finding or argument as presented in the academic readings - to better understand a contemporary case (in the news article). How does the perspective or finding presented in the selected quote (step 2) inform your understanding of the recent news report? Be specific and clear in these connections. Sometimes the academic readings may support some aspects of the news article, and sometimes not, just explain where or how the academic readings are applicable to, or supportive or challenging of, the recent news report. About ¾-1 page – at the minimum. o 4: SELECT & PRESENT A SECOND & DIFFERENT QUOTE from either a different chapter in McNall or a different journal article identified above. Follow the guidelines for Step 2 for the second quote to complete Step 4. o 5: APPLY the quote presented in Step 4 to better explain or understand a different aspect or contribution of the news article. Follow the guidelines for Step 3 for the second quote to complete Step 5. o 6: SUMMARIZE your short essay. What is the key point or points you would like your reader to understand from your application of the academic readings to a recent news article or event? [Relatively easy task] About half of a page
