Note Before You Begin Working on Your Initial Post

I have heard from a few of you that it can at times become difficult/frustrating to move between internet pages as you work on these types of assignments that link you to other pages. I definitely understand that. Given that I need to give you information that is at times detailed, and that requires you to move between pages/screens, I suggest you either print out these instructions or read through them and take notes on the required steps before you begin working on your post. That way you have a hard copy in front of you and do not need to move between pages.

If you would like to download and print a copy of the following instructions, click here

Step 1: Your Initial Post

This Step is worth 5 points

You will be exploring redlining maps from the 1930s-1940s and comparing them to demographic data nowadays.

Please do the following, taking notes along the way as requested. After the following, you will see the questions to answer in your initial post.

  1. Go to Mapping Inequality (https://dsl.richmond.edu/panorama/redlining/#loc=5/39.1/-94.58Links to an external site.)
  2. You will pick 2 cities that had been graded in the 1930s-1940s (i.e., 2 circles identified on the map). Note that at least one of these cities should be outside California. Take note of the names of the cities you selected.
  3. For each city you selected on the map:
    1. Scroll through the Area Descriptions – you’ll see each area is color-coded to indicate how it was graded in the 1930s-40s by HOLC.
    2. Choose 2 districts per city, 1 redlined and 1 greenlined, and click on each. Then click on “Show Full” for each district. Read through the descriptions. Note that you will be reading the descriptions for a total of 4 districts (2 per city). Take note of the name of each district in each city, and take note on at least 1 thing you notice about how descriptions of the districts compare in each city.
  4. Based on the descriptions you read, you should have identified the name of the district area. You will now find the current zip code of those districts by going to the “US Zip Codes” map at https://www.unitedstateszipcodes.orgLinks to an external site.. In the “Enter a Location” bar, enter the name of the district (don’t forget both the city and state!) for each district you selected. Note that you will be getting 4 zip codes -- (2 per city). Be sure to keep track of which zip codes were redlined and which zip codes were greenlined
  5. Now go to The Opportunity Atlas at https://www.opportunityatlas.orgLinks to an external site., read the introduction and click on “Begin Exploring”. Read the “Get Started in Three Easy Steps” overview, then click “OK”. Enter the zip codes for each district area in the “search for address or place” bar.
    1. Take note of the “Household Income at Age 35” for each zip code. Also take note of any other information you find important.
    2. Take note on at least 1 thing you notice about how the two districts in each city compare nowadays.

Now click "Reply" and do the following:

  1. Use the following template to tell us the two cities you selected, the redlined and green lined districts in each, at least one thing you noticed about the description of each district on Mapping Inequality (from #2 and #3 above) and the current day Household Income at Age 35 for each district according to The Opportunity Atlas (from #5 above):
    1. City 1 name and state:
      1. redlined district name:
        • what you note from description on Mapping Inequality:
        • Household Income at Age 35:
      2. green lined district name:
        • what you note from description on Mapping Inequality:
        • Household Income at Age 35:
    2. City 2 name and state:
      1. redlined district name:
        • what you note from description on Mapping Inequality:
        • Household Income at Age 35:
      2. green lined district name:
        • what you note note from description on Mapping Inequality:
        • Household Income at Age 35:
  1. Explain the comparisons of the districts in the 1940s and the comparisons of the districts nowadays (i.e., what you wrote for 1) in terms of the history of redlining and employment discrimination. Please be sure to include your answers to the following specific questions in your overall post: How can the history of redlining and the 3 benefits of wealth explain differences you see in outcomes nowadays? Be sure to reference the course material on the 3 benefits of wealth, which you learned during Week 13 (click here to return to that information), redlining, and the racial wealth gap (here and here). Does anything surprise you? Does anything disappoint you? Anything else you'd like to add?
  2. Explain how racial discrimination in the job market may exacerbate income and wealth gaps between racial groups. In your answer, reference what you learned from the study described in the "Race at Work" article (click here and here to return to that material).
  3. If you could enact at least one change in society to ameliorate/lessen/eliminate racial disparities in wealth and income, what would you propose? How can we as individuals do to help eliminate racial disparities in income and wealth?

Step 2: Your Responses to Classmates

This step is worth 5 points.

Respond to at least 2 classmates by reading their posts and commenting on anything that you find notable, striking, surprising, disappointing, interesting, etc. Make sure your responses are about 75 words in length and are thoughtful.
