Purpose
Watch one of two documentaries and analyze current events as represented in forms of media by paying attention to the notion of power and privilege.
Instructions
Follow the instructions below for your Film Analysis. Upload your assignment here (instead of a discussion post).
*Pick ONE of the two films. Both are similar in topic, but one focuses on Portland, Oregon while the other is based in Atlanta. Both are stories of displacement by gentrification.
- Provide a short summary of the main theme of the film. Acknowledge at least two scientific facts/evidence being presented in the film. If none exist, acknowledge this as well. *Most documentaries will identify some research/science/facts.
- Use the reading from Chapter 2 (located in the module) to identify concepts you can apply to the film.
- Using both the film and Chapter 2, answer the following questions:
- Who holds the "power" and the "privilege" in the film? (think big here, most of the time power and privilege is held by others who might not be directly mentioned in the film). There can be multiple levels of power and privilege, not just one.
- If you find yourself at a dinner party explaining the social problem in the film to people who don't understand, how might you try to "call-in" and explain this more sociologically, without being political? (*this is not easy, but doable!)
