This week's readings highlight the beneficial and detrimental effects of social influence. The PowerPoint lecture on Social Conformity summarizes those key findings and poses several questions for greater reflection and debate. Select one question from within the PowerPoint lecture on Social Conformity and provide your thoughts. These questions ask you to consider potential issues of racial and cultural differences related to the Milgram experiment (slide 4), the application of social influence to voter mobilization efforts (slide 10), the role of cognitive consistency in situations like the Stanford Prison experiment and Abu Ghraib (slide 8), and social pressure during the COVID-19 pandemic (slide 9).
As with most of our discussion prompts, there are no right or wrong answers here. Rather, these questions are meant to launch critical thinking and applications across topics. Share whatever perspectives, insights, arguments, and/or counterpoints you have regarding your selected question.
