Overview
The assingment is pretty clear and simple. Read through the reading provided/attached below by Karl Marx (communist manifesto). Then, answer the reading response question below, Lastly, provide a discussion question about the topic.
Response Question:
Here are a few questions to consider as you read The Communist Manifesto: What are the primary causes of historical change? What is driving the major economic and political changes throughout history? What is the relationship between politics and the economy? Which determines which? How and why? How did the bourgeoisie become the ruling class? What must they do to remain the ruling class? How will capitalism bring about its own demise? How will the proletariat come to be the ruling class? Why is it the only truly revolutionary class? Why would the rule of the proletariat not be oppressive? Is Marx anti-capitalist? In what ways? In what ways is he not?
Write your answer in a 3-4 paragraph reflection on the reading question. The reflection should summarize the main points of the reading for the week (Marx) and compare it to previous readings (Marx).
Discussion Question:
You should also raise a possible discussion question. You should put some real thought into these.
This question wouldn’t get you any credit: I wonder how this reading relates to other things we have read?
This would get you some: Marx argues that society will increasingly split into two classes, the bourgeoise and the proletariat. Why didn’t he foresee the growth of the middle class?
Better still: Marx argues that ownership of the means of production is the primary source of inequality in capitalism. The Weber readings from this week suggest that other forms of ownership and control over scarce resources remain equally, if not, more important than one’s relationship to the means of production. How would each explain the tremendous economic power generated by Silicon Valley firms in recent years?
Just to clarify its the 3 paragraphs responding to the response question, and then to come up with a discussion question based on what you just wrote. Also provide discussion question, an example of a good one is the part with marx and weber.
