Discussion 6 - Cognitive Dissonance
Social Learning Theory suggests that we form our attitudes by watching and seeing others as part
of the socialization process. Cognitive Dissonance emerges from two conflicting
feelings/thoughts about something as we grapple within ourselves. It would stand to reason that
perhaps as we grow up, we learn from those around us, but as we become more independent and
move out on our own, new attitudes that conflict with these learned attitudes begin to emerge.
Research shows that this is particularly true among college students.
Question - Give an example of this in your own life. Something you grew up having an opinion
or attitude towards but then find it changing and struggling as you move through this change.
Explain.
