Overview

Answer all parts of the essay questions (including sub-questions) clearly, sufficiently, and coherently with analytical and critical rigor

Make each of your essays flow like a coherent analytic essay with an introduction, topic sentences, arguments, and evidence (from required readings or lectures only), and conclusion.

You should address each of the sub-questions in a separate paragraph

Your essay should contain at least an intro paragraph; 3 substantive paragraphs, each addressing a sub-question; and a concluding paragraph.

For each essay, you should provide at least one example to illustrate each point you are making and cite properly. You should include at least 6different required readings or lectures (may cite one source multiple times).

  • Limit your essay to 4-5 typed, double-spaced pages (~1,500 words), Times New Roman with 1-inch margins.

Essay II: In the recorded lecture by Dr. Joon-Kon Chung in Week 1, the idea of the Asian Community—a borderless One Asia—is articulated and re-imagined. Throughout this quarter, we have discussed various issues relevant to this idea primarily through the lens of intra-Asian migrations and diaspora-homeland interactions. What are the challenges and opportunities of building an integrated Asian community in the era of rapid globalization and frequent cross-border movements? Please discuss: a) Why do nation-states relax or enforce their borders for human movements? b) What role do nation-states, migration intermediaries, diasporic networks, and individual migrants play to facilitate or inhibit cross-border movements? c) Is it possible to build an integrated Asian community today or in the near future (why it is or why it isn’t)?
