Overview
In this paper, you will read about the scholarship of Judith Lorber. Lober lays out an in-depth
analysis of how gender and gender roles are constructed daily. Christine Percheski gives insight
into how scholars of gender inequality have sought to understand why the progress toward
employment equality has stalled. Generally, the organization of work and family life has mostly
stayed the same. Correll, Benards, and Paik give further understanding to offer empirical
evidence on whether motherhood is penalized in the labor market and what mechanisms cause
this inequality. Andersen and Collins examine how race, class, and gender independently shape
one's life chances, but typically, these identities intersect.
Based on the readings, construct a count paper on the following questions:
? What is socially constructed gender?
? How is gender socially constructed?
? Explain how the "matrix of domination" disadvantages women as it pertains to race,
class, and gender.
? Do men lose or gain in a society that ranks men superior and women inferior? Explain.
