Overview
In their study, Williams, Russell, and Summerville identify two broad strategies through which HBCU administrators and faculty contribute to culturally engaging environments capable of supporting students’ success. One set of strategies involves “culturally relevant and sustaining practices” that “increase[s] Black students’ socio-political consciousness about issues related to Black communities; and reposition the experiences of these communities into a place of normativity within the educational enterprise" (p. 738). Another set of strategies entails efforts to “create culturally engaging environments by emphasizing culturally relevant knowledge and cultural validation” (p 738.)
