Tasks
For this assignment, I would like you to answer the following questions. Please write in full sentences and paragraphs and cite your materials correctly--e.g. (Swan 2024 Lecture Module 6 Part 1 [or Part 2]), or (Inderbitzen, Bates & Gainey 2019: page number if using direct quote). This can be done in written form in answers that add up to at least 300 words or an audio recording (up to 8 mins.)
Original Assignment (answer all three questions)
- Answer two of the three questions posed on the slides in your Module 6 lecture (the slides where I ask you to pause and write down some answers to the questions listed). 1. what are some of the ways the gender stereotypes and sexism play roles in deviance and social control. 2. what are some of the ways that racism affects deviance and social control?
- Write a few sentences analyzing what you learned in the #sayhername video (BronxNet 2020) relating the material to critical race and feminist theories. If you would like you can also try and extend your analysis to include peacemaking and queer theories as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVO6HjCKqzY
- Choose to answer either the Now You...Use the Theory textbox questions listed in Chapter 10 of PDSC (Inderbitzen, Bates & Gainey 2019) or the two questions listed below on Perez Huber and Solorzano's article
- Critical theorist W.E.B. Du Bois pointed out through the concept of double consciousness, that people of color have to “look at one’s self through the eyes of others” as noted by Pérez Huber and Solorzano. Explain how this relates to why the authors did their study and what they chose to examine in their study.
- After looking at the three examples of visual microaggressions in the article and the authors’ analysis of these images, brainstorm the answer to the question that they include at the end of their article, “how do we cultivate a sense of transformative hope within Youth of Color that will enable them to resist the racism they will encounter in their lives and take action to challenge it?"
