For this assignment, you should enact a specific behavior that is “doing gender” differently than you normally “do.” For many of you, this will mean you will enact a behavior that is generally considered socially inappropriate for your gender among the type of people you normally interact with—such as family, friends, other students at UCSB, etc. For others (e.g., trans, non- binary other gender queer people), this might be more complicated. In either case, as long as you enact a specific behavior that is “doing gender” differently than you normally “do” you can write about it for this essay1. After the experience of “doing gender” differently, write an essay about the experience. In this essay you must do the following things (though not necessarily in this order): 1) Describe what you did to “do gender” differently. a. Answers question at all: 35 points b. Answers excellently: 0-20 points 2) Discuss the experience in the context of class lectures and readings. You must use concept, theories, and/or terms from the class and use them correctly. a. Does this at all: 30 points b. Does this excellently: 0-20 points 3) In your essay, answer these five questions: a. Before the experience, did you predict that you might be held “accountable” for “doing gender”? i. Answers question at all: 10 points ii. Answers excellently: 0-5 points b. How did others actually react to your actions? Were you held “accountable” for “doing gender”? i. Answers question at all: 10 points ii. Answers excellently: 0-5 points 1 If you are finding this assignment difficult because you are not cisgendered and therefore routinely are not “doing” the gender you were assigned to at birth, pick one example of something you have done recently and do the assignment based on that. If you have questions or concerns about this, please feel free to run them by the professor or your TA.
2 c. Do you think that the thing that you did differently is associated with gender inequality? Why or why not? The introduction chapter to the text book may be especially useful to you for thinking about this. i. Answers question at all: 10 points ii. Answers excellently: 0-5 points d. How does the “multi-level model of gender” relate to your experience? i. Answers question at all: 10 points ii. Answers excellently: 0-5 points e. Did you learn anything about gender in this exercise? i. Answers question at all: 10 points ii. Answers excellently: 0-5 points You may also write about any other interesting things that struck you about this experience, even if they are not addressed in the above questions. For example, how did you feel as you were “doing gender” differently? Did you learn anything about yourself through this exercise? Note that you don’t get extra points for making a dramatic change in how you normally “do gender.” We don’t want you to do anything that makes you extremely uncomfortable, and certainly we don’t want you to do anything that makes you unsafe. Rather, our focus is on your sociological analysis (through the theoretical lens of “doing gender) of what happens if you intentionally don’t “do gender.” You will get no extra points for doing something very extreme. Do something that feels a little uncomfortable to you, but not too uncomfortable. All that is required for an excellent essay is that you do an excellent sociological analysis of whatever you do, through the theoretical lens of “doing gender.” You should do something new specifically for this assignment. Don’t tell us about something that you did in the past.
The paper should be three double-spaced pages using Times New Roman, font size 12, 1” margins. Create a word document that has your full name at the top, a three-page essay, and references, in that order. Your header should not take up more than 3 double-spaced lines. You do not need a title or a title page. The three-page essay length does NOT include references or your name. If your formatting makes it difficult to tell how many double-spaced pages the body of your essay is (remember: it should be 3 double-spaced pages), we may take points off for page length.
3 Please upload a word or a PDF document onto Canvas. Please have the file named like this: YourLastName_YourFirstName_Assignment2_SOC155. You can earn up to 5 points for a properly formatted essay that follows the instructions for formatting on the assignment sheet (proper font size, appropriate spacing between paragraphs, etc.). All ideas and evidence that are not originally your own should be properly cited using the American Sociological Association citation style, each time you use such an idea. You must use the ASA citation style in the text of your paper as well as in the reference section. You must have a list of references after the essay. You do not need any outside references, but you must properly reference class materials. To see how to properly do references and citation using the ASA style see the PDF called “How To Do ASA Citations” at the top of our Canvas page. All essays should be written so that a sociology undergraduate student or professor NOT in our class could read it and understand perfectly. Therefore, you should fully define terms learned in our class (for example, “gendered”, the “multi-level model of gender”, “deceptive differences”, etc.). When you define these terms, make sure you cite them in the proper ASA style. You can earn up to 5 points for citing material when appropriate and for an excellent use of the ASA citation style. You must refer to class readings and concepts, however, you do not need to refer to sources outside of what we read in class (though you can if you want to). Extra points can be earned for particularly insightful thinking or superior writing. We reserve the right to deduct points for problems with your assignment that are not listed above, but will almost never do so.
