Overview
Answer two short essay questions. You can only use information from the lectures and lecture notes. The questions will be on Karl Marx and Max Weber. Each answer should be around 350-450 words.
Question 1:
According to Max Weber, how does rational bureaucracy become an "iron cage" in the modern world? (For this question, you will need to consider the three types of authority outlined by Weber, what major characteristics separate rational-legal from the other two, list several key characteristics of bureaucracy, and then whether Weber supports rational bureaucracy throughout his life).
Question 2: Please discuss Marx's concept of Capitalism and Class conflict. In answering this question, you should include (but not limited to) some of the major components of capitalism such as the prerequisites of capitalism, the role of division of labor, competition, direct living labor vs accumulated labor, unequal power relationship, and enclosure movement (aka private property).
