Organization and Clarity of Essay = 5 points

Part 1/3(of part 2)

We have examined Freud’s contention that the relationship between culture (or civilization)

and individuals is potentially characterized by “irreconcilable” conflict. Hence, the title:

Civilization and Its Discontents.

How, exactly, does Freud arrive at this contention? What is it, specifically, about us

as individuals and about culture in general that leads Freud to this assessment?

In responding, you may wish to consider:

What role ‘libido’ and ‘drives’ play in Freud’s analysis of human nature.

How Freud’s theory of the mind, as outlined in Civilization and its Discontents, relates to his

understanding of the ‘Pleasure Principle’ and the ‘Reality Principle.’

The role of the unconscious in Freud’s diagnosis of civilization.

Part 2/3 (of part 2)

We have learned about the Repressive State Apparatus and Ideological State Apparatuses

from Althusser’s Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses essay. We have also learned

about interpellation/hailing, the ‘Big S,’ and the ‘doing’ of ideology from Althusser.

Why does Althusser afford such a prominent role to ideological state apparatuses in

his analysis of ideology?

Why does Althusser stress that ideology is material in character?

What is meant by ‘Big S’? How does ‘Big S’ relate to ideology, according to

Althusser?

Part 3/3 (of part 2)

We have investigated ‘The Woman Question’ as posed and analyzed by De Beauvoir in The

Second Sex. We know that De Beauvoir critiques and ultimately rejects biology as ‘destiny.’

Relatedly, we also know that De Beauvoir identifies and rejects as inadequate a series of

‘solutions’ to ‘The Woman Question.’

What attempts at addressing the Woman Question does De Beauvoir identify?

Briefly explain why De Beauvoir finds such attempts at ‘solving’ the Woman

Question inadequate.

What role is society/culture playing in De Beauvoir’s analysis and assessment of

sex/gender?

Bonus Questions: 7 points (Approx. 1-2 sentences per question)

Why does Willis discuss authoritarianism in her broader analyses of popular

Culture?

What is Freud’s critique of “The Communists” in Civilization and its

Discontents?

What does De Beauvoir mean when, speaking of biology, she contends that

  • [facts] “do not carry their meaning in themselves”? (pp. 46)

How does Althusser’s concept of interpellation relate to De Beauvoir’s analyses?

  • Freud, Althusser, and De Beauvoir are seated together around a table. The topic of discussion

for the evening is ‘culture and destiny’.

  • What is one claim on this topic that Freud might make? Why?

What is one claim on this topic that Althusser might make? Why?

  • What is one claim on this topic that De Beauvoir might make? Why?
