Culture Portion: Watch the links below that are related to Culture. Warning - Some of the images in the videos are graphic and disturbing.  After viewing them, compose a response answering the following questions:

What responsibility does the United States have, if any, to try to intervene when other nations commit human rights violations within their borders?

When should the U.S., for example, try to stop the practice of female genital mutilation in Somalia, breast ironing in Camaroon, slavery in Sudan, China's one child policy, honor killing, or other harmful practices in other countries?

  • Is it just as inhumane for the U.S. and other nations to do nothing when these atrocities are committed? Why, or why not?
  • Should countries outside of the U.S. have an equal right to try to stop the U.S. from committing practices that, as some other countries may see it, also constitute human rights violations?
  • What American customs or practices might other countries view as problematic or inhumane?
  • How would these practices (in the videos) be explained from the functional analysis and the conflict theory? (Don't merely define the theories, apply them to these practices.)
  • Review the links as needed in order to:
  • Answer the questions using at least 150 words

Include 3 quotes (at least 5 words) from the videos

Support your position with the concepts found in the textbook and cite the page number where your supporting evidence can be found

Breast Ironing on the Rise in Britain

Why is a child's gender important?  Why do others (people outside of the child's immediate family) want to know a child's sex and/or gender?  Aside from medical reasons, is there any reason people need to know a child's gender and/or sex?  Why or why not?

What pronouns do you prefer people to use when referring to you, and what do those represent (symbolize) to you?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of raising a child without gender or gender neutral?

How long can parents reasonably expect to raise their children in a gender neutral environment?  That is, is there an age at which it becomes impractical, if not impossible, to continue raising a child without a gendered imprint?  Why?
