Overview
Chapters 7 Interaction, Groups, and Organizations and 8 Deviance and Social Control
Examine the social media sites you frequent. How do you know the people with whom you are “friends.” Are your Facebook friends a part of your primary, secondary, or reference groups? Are they not a part of any of their groups? Why are you friends with people that you do not really know?
List activities that used to be done face-to-face that are no longer done that way, either because the process is automated, or we now do it on the computer. How has society changed because we no longer conduct these interactions in person? What interactions will always be done in person? Why? What influence did the Covid-19 pandemic have on these interactions?
- Consider the legalization of marijuana. Who has decided that smoking marijuana is deviant behavior? Who has more influence in this regard: society or the law? Why is it considered deviant behavior? Where smoking marijuana is no longer illegal, is it still considered deviant behavior?
- Discuss The Stanford Prison Experiment. What prevented “good guards” from objecting to the orders from the “bad guards”? Why did the “inmates” try to work within the system rather than try to dismantle or change the system through outside help? Based on the outcome of this study, what can we say about the effect of prison on real prisoners? How can this study help us understand the importance of the situation on deviant behavior?
