Presentations on Theories of Sexuality

Overview

Speaking about white European men in power, in this case within the institution of Higher Education, Sigmund Freud dominated conversations about sexuality in the late 1800s and early 1900s because he had the courage (and the opportunity) to talk about sexuality within his theoretical framework: psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is no longer popular in academic circles today. Still, we owe him some respect: he not only built a powerful theoretical perspective with sexuality at the center but he made talking about sexuality from an intellectual perspective fashionable and popular, even among the masses. Most theories of sexuality today have a relationship with Freudian thought, primarily because they justify their theories by arguing against him in one way or another. Feminist scholars have also built a very rich and diverse set of theories about sexuality, beginning in the 1970s, followed by social construction, symbolic interaction, post-modern, and queer theories
