health behavior questions

Overview

Health Behavior: (Reducing the amount of coffee during the day)

Apply a Health Behavior Theory: Choose one of the 6 health behavior theories and write a paragraph describing how this theory might explain your motivation, intentions, or actions related to your health behavior and factors that make you more or less likely to engage in the behavior.

The Six Health Behavior Theories: Health Belief Model, Self-Efficacy Theory, Theory of Planned Behavior, Behavioral Theory, Transtheoretical Model, Health Action Process Approach

2. Make a "SMART" goal for your health behavior. The SMART in SMART goals stand for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Focus on achievable - make this a small goal that is realistic and feasible for you over the next month. Make sure it is also measurable - meaning, when you track your health behavior this month, you will be able to tell whether you achieved the goal or not. See this

Examples of a health behavior-focused SMART goals:

  • I will do physical activity (jogging, yoga, or cardio) for at least 20 minutes per day, at least 3 days per week for the next month.
  • I will reduce my smoking by 1 cigarette per day for at least 5 days out of the week for the next 4 weeks.
  • I will get at least 7 hours of sleep at least 4 nights per week for the next month.

3. Describe your intervention. Describe the “intervention” or change method you plan to use to modify your selected health behavior. This is something you will add to your day or begin doing differently to help you change your health behavior. For example: perhaps you’d like to cut down on your vaping or coffee consumption. Your change method might be to take a short walk every day or practice deep breathing when you have a craving. Or perhaps your goal is to do more physical activity. Your intervention could be to schedule the physical activity by putting it on your calendar each day, or asking a friend to do exercise with you at least once per week. You will try this intervention approach over the next few weeks as you work towards achieving your SMART goal. You can have more than one intervention strategy if you want! In a paragraph, explain why you decided to take this approach, using information you learned in your literature review and/or the behavior change theory you discussed above.
