Correlations on SPSS
Please note you will need a computer to do this assignment and not a mobile phone. As a scientist we are expected to conduct research and do so on computers so we do not have to hand compute quantitative formulas with large data sets.
AFTER reviewing the lecture notes on SPSS in class, please test for the correlation of any two variables in the data set (do not use sex or male/female). Then, discuss your results. Your discussion must include the coefficients and their level of statistical significance (the asterisks). If there is no asterisk, they do not correlate and you may not use them as they cannot be interpreted as a correlation.
NOTE: You will need to have SPSS to do this assignment. You may upload a free but limited time (2 weeks) version of SPSSLinks to an external site.

Example
Is there a correlation between a student who lives in a household with other relatives AND a household with other non-relatives?
- Click on Analyze
- Click on Correlate
- Chose bivariate
- Click and drag (or double click) on the variables in the left window and bring them into the window on the right (under “Variables”)
- R Lives in Household w/Other Relative
- R Lives in Household W/Non-Relatives
- Be sure Pearson test is clicked (this is the default setting)
- Click OK
You will receive this output:
Correlations | |||
|---|---|---|---|
R LIVES IN HOUSEHOLD W/OTHER RELATIVE(S) | R LIVES IN HOUSEHOLD W/ NON-RELATIVE(S) | ||
R LIVES IN HOUSEHOLD W/OTHER RELATIVE(S) | Pearson Correlation | 1 | .020* |
Sig. (2-tailed) | .022 | ||
N | 13659 | 13659 | |
R LIVES IN HOUSEHOLD W/ NON-RELATIVE(S) | Pearson Correlation | .020* | 1 |
Sig. (2-tailed) | .022 | ||
N | 13659 | 13659 | |
*. Correlation is significant at the 0.05 level (2-tailed). |
The answer to our question is:
There is a statistically significant correlation between if a student lives in a household with other relatives and a household with non-relatives (r = .02*).
- Your answer needs to be formatted exactly like my example above.
Statistical Significance
If there is no asterisk, there is no statistical significance, and no covariation or correlation.
There is no effect between X and Y unless there is at least 1 asterisk.
You may not use variables in this assignment unless there is a correlation.
