Overview

Mobility

Please discuss only 1 of the questions below

  1. What percentage of the bottom 80% of Americans inherit $50,000 or more? How does that affect mobility?
  2. Given what you learned about mobility, why do the top 1% rarely inherit before age 30? How does that affect mobility?

Please use material from our class to make your claims.

I added a file of the chapter below.

The distance between social location (at birth) and social destination (at death) is termed social mobility. We generally think of this as a ladder - where we hope we will increase in finance, status, and power. Please read Chapter 8 in our textbook. We will introduce you to the concept of mobility, view how much mobility exists, how it is structured. Remember, earning money is not increasing one's social class -- social class has to do with real power. Moving up the ladder is not as simple as getting a better paying job; moving up the ladder would be changing the lifestyle of you and your family for a generation.
