Overview
Assignment: Pick an NGO from http://www.globalmodernslavery.org/. Research the NGO by looking at its website, including any history provided, its mission statement, project descriptions, annual reports and funding information. Drawing from this information, as well as course materials, write a paper with the following components: 1) NGO Description: What kind of NGO is it? For example, you might note where it is located (a rural area in a sending country or a big city in a large, wealthy destination country etc.), whether it works in countries outside of where it is headquartered; whether it is a small or large organization; whether it is part of a broader network of NGOs; whether it receives funding from foreign sources; whether it is run by women or men; or whether it is run by survivors or has celebrity involvement. 2) Analysis of Trafficking Discourse and Images: Describe the type(s) of human trafficking that the NGO combats, including the way that the NGO characterizes the problem, its causes, and its extent. What kinds of images and language does the NGO use? Also identify problems, if any, in the NGO’s description of trafficking and/or gaps in knowledge about trafficking. Draw from course materials to help you with this analysis. 3) Analysis of Anti-Trafficking Strategies: Describe and critically analyze the NGO’s strategies for responding to the trafficking situation from a sociological perspective. Be sure to think about the ways that race/ethnicity, class and/or gender inequalities are shaping or being shaped by the strategies used by the NGO. What is being done and is it helpful? Why/why not? What responses might be missing and why? Is the NGO working with governments or businesses and what might be some strengths or weaknesses of those partnerships? Draw from course materials to help you with this analysis. 4) Conclusion: What overall conclusion do you draw from your analysis? If you were asked to consult on anti-trafficking strategies with this NGO, what would you suggest to them and why? Format: 7 pages of text, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins, and a 12-point font. Include a cover page with your name and use page numbers. Cite course readings and lectures in the text of your essay using parentheses and page numbers (Mahdavi, p. 186) or (Lecture 09/24/2024).
