can you do this

Overview

This is part 1 of our Gendered Moments project. For this assignment, you will spend a 24 hour period of time paying close attention to the way gender is coming up in your life. I would encourage you to pick a day when you will interact with lots of people. Picking your busiest day might be very helpful. You will be taking notes and focusing on when and how gender is appearing throughout your day.

Below are a few suggestions to help you focus your observation. In your notes, you want to be detailed and specific. Your notes do NOT need to be full sentence.

**AI is NOT allowed for this assignment.**

  • Things to think about:
    • Try to be as detailed and thorough as possible.
    • Verbal gendered moments (pronouns, comments on appearance, gendered roles, gender stereotypes aka "throw like a girl" etc.)
    • Nonverbal gendered moments (who holds open doors more, how did someone of the same gender versus opposite gender react to something happening around you, physical presentation, closeness and proximity, how much space someone takes up, tone, etc.)
    • Assumptions (were there times where you caught yourself assuming things about others' gender, why and how)
      • Note assumptions are not inherently bad, it is the way we act on assumptions that we need to be very aware of
    • Feelings (moments where you were acutely aware of your gender suddenly, the feeling of a certain outfit or favorite accessory, etc.)
    • Consumerism (ads, stores, items, clothes, etc.)
  • Notes:
    • You should submit your notes to Canvas by 11:59 PM.
    • You may type or write your notes. If you write, please make sure it is legible and submit pictures on Canvas.
    • While there is not a specific "length" of notes, I expect it will be between 1.5-2 pages, double-spaced,
    • Tip: I would encourage you to have a small notebook or note on your phone where you can quickly jot things down throughout the day.
