For your final assignment, you will put together all of the work that you have done throughout the quarter. You have already decided on a topic/research question, have compiled a list of sources that you will utilize, decided on a sampling frame, and collected and analyzed data. Now, you will put this—along with some new components—together for a final paper.

Components

  1. Cover Page: This should include a title for your paper (that communicates the subject of your work) and your name. It should also include an abstract. An abstract is a short paragraph (around 250 words or less) that summarizes your paper.
  1. Introduction: This is where you will present your topic of study and discuss your research question/questions. Provide your reader with an overview of what is to come in the paper. (1-2 pages)
  1. Literature Review: In this section, you will utilize the annotated bibliography from assignment #2 to write a literature review. This should be in essay format, not bullet points. The goal is to synthesize and discuss previous research on your topic. You should also use this section to make an argument—utilizing previous research--about why your research question is important. (2-5 pages)
  1. Data and Methods: In this section you will describe the data and the method that you used to answer your research question. Tell us about your data and why you chose it. Since this is a methods class, I expect a thorough discussion of content analysis (what it is, why it is useful, and why it is the best method to answer your research question). In this section, I would also like a discussion of how you sampled your data. The important thing is that you provide a justification for whatever sampling method you choose. (1-2 pages)
  1. Findings and Discussion: In this section you will describe your findings. After doing the research, how will you answer your question? How do you know you found what you found? What themes emerged? Were your surprised by the data? How do your findings relate to existing research in your literature review? (2-3 pages)
  1. Conclusion: Reiterate your findings and your argument. Close with a discussion about what further research is necessary on this topic. You may also reflect on the research process in general. (1-3 paragraphs)
  1. Appendix: Include your coding sheet that describes how you coded your data.
  1. Works Cited: Include a works cited page in ASA format.

Grading Rubric: Soc. 108C Final Paper

Please use this rubric in conjunction with the assignment, which provides more details about the expectations in each section.

1. Cover Page (5 points): Title and well-written, concise abstract.

2. Introduction (10 points): The introduction should be a clear and organized portion of the paper that clearly states your research question and an overview of your project.

3. Literature Review (15 points): This section should synthesize the literature. Literature should not be presented in sequential order, but grouped thematically, or by topic, or by similarities/differences. The best literature reviews will use this organization to bolster the main argument/findings of the paper.

4. Data/Methods (20 points): This section should describe the method employed and sampling using relevant material from class. It should clearly explain the justification for using your particular data to answer your research question, and justify each step of the sampling process.

5. Findings and Discussion (15 points): The findings section answers the following questions: What did you find? Using the literature, why do you think you found what you did? Thoroughly explain the patterns you see, organizing the data you present in a way easy for the reader to follow. Use the data to build your main argument.

6. Conclusion (10 points): In the conclusion, reiterate findings and summarize the paper. The best conclusions will include a reflection of the research process and how further research can explore the topic.

7. Appendix (15 points): Include relevant coding materials.

8. Works Cited (10 points): Proper ASA format for citations.
