Overview
Find three news articles/reports (excluding op-eds) about empirical instances of social de-
viance/crime/social control that occurred this year (2025). These three news articles/reports
should speak to the same or similar type of empirical deviant act(s), criminal behavior(s), or
agent(s) of social control.
Each of the three news articles/reports should be a minimum of 500 words. Copy and paste
them to the last pages of your final paper as an appendix (after your reference list).
Note: Check reputable online news sources. Good sources for this assignment include but are
not limited to the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and other news outlets
to which the Library has subscription.
2. Write a thorough summary of the three news articles/reports you find. At the beginning of
this section, point out what the same or similar type of empirical deviant act(s), criminal
behavior(s), or agent(s) of social control that the three news articles/reports speak to.
This part should be 2 to 4 pages.
3. Write an analysis of the three news articles/reports. Specifically, use at least three theories of
social deviance/crime/social control covered in our course to analyze the the same or similar
type of empirical deviant act(s), criminal behavior(s), or agent(s) of social control that the
news articles/reports speak to. The theories you draw on should help better understand the
empirical cases.
Note: For each of the three (or more) theories you connect to, cite at least two academic
journal articles/books/book chapters to support your argument.
This part should be 6 to 8 pages.
Submission Guidelines
The paper should be in the essay format, 8 to 12 pages, double-spaced, 1 inch margins, and
using 12-pt font.
It must include in-text citations and a reference list (using the ASA / APA format).
