Deep Dive Prompt

For your entire life, the relationship between the federal, state, and local governments and drug users has been characterized as a "War on Drugs." Some would argue this has been a

war on drug users. How effective has this so-called war been in reducing illegal drug use?

What are some of the reasons you can think that punitive policies and incarceration may not have reduced drug use in the US? Are there policies you think would be more effective?

What happens when we look at states that have legalized certain drugs, such as, California and Colorado? What about states that have

legalized all drugs, like Oregon and Washington State? Are we seeing catastrophic crime rate

as a consequence of these substantive shifts policy?

What do we think the impact has been on minority populations? Do these policies disaffect some groups more than others? What is the historical trend in how governments have responded to different ethnic minorities when they use drugs (Do we see opium become illegal when Chinese railroad builders started using it? Do we see marijuana become illegal when Mexican fieldworkers started using it? Do we see a particular response to urban African-American crack users?, for example). How might we explain the various responses to certain groups by the dominant class from a sociological, conflict perspective?

Lastly, what has this done to police and community member relationships? Has the way in which our police operate, look, and respond to illegal drug use/sales increased or decreased tensions in the community? Has it

made those communities safer?
